23 Aug A lioness among the lions – a female litigator’s perspective by Hemali Govind
Being a female in the legal profession, in particular, being a litigator requires a lot of passion for the law. It requires perseverance and a lot of initiative.
I realised very early on in my career that in order to succeed in this profession I would need to seize every opportunity that was presented to me. I needed to be aggressive in my practice of the law and be ready for every challenge that came my way.
Through my years of practice and experience I have come to realise and understand that looking for opportunities to prove my abilities was not only limited to my early years of practice, but needs to be a career long habit. I have also come to realise and understand that being a successful lawyer does not mean that one has to compromise one’s ethics. Practicing law with integrity is of utmost importance to me.
Being in practice requires me to step out of my comfort zone on a regular basis and to never back down when faced with a challenge.
As a senior associate a TGR Attorneys, I strive to use the platform to empower my female colleagues in helping them to be the best lawyers that they can be. To encourage them to continuously educate themselves and be confident in their practice of the law. I strongly believe that knowledge is the true source of empowerment which no one can ever take away from you.
As we celebrate Women’s Month, I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to all women out there to embrace every challenge that they are faced with and pursue every opportunity that is presented to them – the sky is the limit!
